Critics Consensus

Deftly directed by Adam Rehmeier, Snack Shack is a period-set coming-of-age comedy that's witty and charming enough to largely transcend its lack of originality.

Snack Shack | Rotten Tomatoes (1) J. Kim Murphy Variety Armed with a talented cast, writer-director Adam Rehmeier’s 1991-set feature happily squares itself in a tradition of teenage hedonism and broad learning opportunities, settling into a generic but warm glow. Mar 16, 2024 Full Review Snack Shack | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Matt Schimkowitz AV Club Even with the script’s problems, the film is kinetic, and as in Dinner In America, Rehmeier gets terrific performances from his cast. Rated: C Mar 15, 2024 Full Review Snack Shack | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Calum Marsh New York Times With its rambling momentum and quick-witted, almost musical dialogue, it feels less like “Superbad” than a Robert Altman movie, sort of like a pint-size “California Split.” Mar 14, 2024 Full Review Snack Shack | Rotten Tomatoes (4) JD Duran InSession Film Snack Shack is one of my favorite overlooked movies of the year. Rated: B+ Sep 27, 2024 Full Review Snack Shack | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Terry Staunton Radio Times The naturalistic chemistry between the leads shines through to keep viewers rooting for the likeable youngsters to come out on top. Rated: 3/5 Sep 13, 2024 Full Review Snack Shack | Rotten Tomatoes (6) John Serba Decider The laughs it inspires are real, and the good-natured warmth of the characters and performances saves the day. jc Enjoyed the fun of it! The swearing wasn't necessary though and detracted from the fun. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Bill N A fun buddy flic that brought a piece of the 90's back... will buy it on blu-ray when released Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review Mr. Hollywood A good enough coming an age story and nostalgia for those who grew up in the 90s before smart phones and Internet in every home. Those were the best of times where you could mess up and not have it recorded online for life. Worth a watch Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review Andrew While it bends on occasion towards trope, the early 90s vibe saturates every scheme, every antic, with the quintessential era emotional gut punch. Gabriel LaBelle, near unrecognizable following The Fabelmans, and Conor Sherry lead with the aplomb of film veterans, and Nick Robinson brings the coming of age crown he aptly earned in Kings of Summer. I cant recall the last time I sat in theater filled with that much consistent laughter throughout the crowd. This original content would die on the streaming vine amongst the endless jumble of algorithms and scrolling, thanks Paramount and MRC for giving this the theatrical run. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Noppers Its not funny which I was expecting but entertaining and has a surprisingly heartfelt ending. Think Superbad meets dazed and confused. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Judith The use of the F word was WAY OVER USED!!!! The amount of usage of the word brought down the enjoyment and credibility of the movie. Being from the Nebraska City/Sidney/Peru area, we enjoyed seeing familiar scenes. But I suggest cleaning up the language. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
